The Tanarus server
is latanarus2.station.sony.com
To play Tanarus, your firewall needs to pass
UDP packets with port numbers greater than 1023 from latanarus2.station.sony.com.
In addition it needs to allow TCP traffic on port 8080 to www.tanarus.com
In the corner of the Tanarus screen, there is a network status indicator. This is a graphical representation of your connection to the Tanarus server. The first number is your round trip time (ping) to the server. The second number is the percentage of packets sent to your computer that never arrived (packet loss). The third number is the percentage of packets sent to the Tanarus server that never arrived (packet loss). The final number on the far right represents the amount of data being received in bytes per second. This will vary depending on what is occurring in the game at the time — e.g. lots of activity nearby = more data being received.
Immediately below these numbers are two connected bars. The bar on the left represents the flow of data coming from the server. The bar on the right represents the flow of data to the server. If you are well connected to the Tanarus server, these bars will be solid green. Two solid green bars means that all recent packets that were sent actually arrived at the destination. If you see a gap in either bar, that indicates that a packet that was sent never arrived at its intended destination because it was lost on the network.
| Improving Your Connection |
Note: These are only suggestions of ways that could improve your connection. No guarantees are made or implied that these suggestions will improve everyone's connection.
Modem / Dial-Up users:
- Contact your ISP and ask them what equipment they use (the most popular seems to be Lucent). This is very important in obtaining maximum performance from your dial up connection.
- Ask them what modem they recommend using.
- Download a "tweak" program such as Tweak All or other similar programs that can change the MTU, MSS, and RWIN in Windows to gain better performance over your dial up adapter. The best place I have found is http://www.download.com. There is also a lot more in-depth information there that could possibly help you further improve your connection to the game.
- Check for the latest drivers for your modem. A popular site is http://www.56k.com. Or try your modem manufacturers website.
- 5. Check for resource conflicts. In some cases, a shared IRQ with another device can severely hamper the performance of your modem.
To do this in Win 9x:
- Right-click on the "My Computer" icon on your desktop.
- Select "Properties." This brings up the System Properties window.
- Click on the Device Manager tab.
- At the bottom, click the properties button. This now opens the Computer Properties window. The radio button "Interrupt Request" should be checked by default. If it is not, then check it.
- Scan down the list of IRQ addresses until you see your modem. Look to see if there are any other devices sharing the same IRQ. The only acceptable device would be IRQ holder for PCI steering.
- Try running a tracert to the Tanarus server. There are two easy ways to do this.
To run it from a DOS prompt:
- Go to your Start Menu, then Programs and click on the MS-DOS Prompt Icon.
- At the C:\WINDOWS prompt, type: tracert latanarus2.station.sony.com.
Another easy way is to download Neotrace from http://www.download.com and use that to perform the traces. Examine the trace results, and see where the problem may be. It is very possible that the poor connection you are experiencing is beyond your control. If this is the case, you may want to consider an alternate ISP.
- Another possible problem may be in your phone wiring or lines to your local telephone company. If all else fails, try contacting them and see if it would be possible to have your lines checked for noise. Also, check your own connections in your home. Make sure all connections to your main box (most phone companies call them interfaces) are secure and well made.
Cable Modem / DSL Users:
High-speed users who are having trouble with their connections are a bit more limited in the things that can be done to improve performance. Using "Tweak" programs, as described above, sometimes help, but rarely make a huge difference.
- Try running a tracert to the Tanarus server. There are two easy ways to do this.
To run it from a DOS prompt:
- Go to your Start Menu, then Programs and click on the MS-DOS Prompt Icon.
